Band of Brothers – Bringing the World War II Experiences to Life

Band of Brothers is a 10 part miniseries which chronicles the life of a group of soldiers in Easy Company during World War II. The miniseries begins with the experiences of Easy Company as they begin their jump training in Georgia and ends with the defeat of Germany at the end of the war. This article will discuss some more details on the series and its characters.

 

This series was shot over approximately 10 months in England. They used this location to construct replicas of several different European towns. There were actually twelve different towns created including Bastogne in Belgium; Eindhoven in the Netherlands; and Carentan in France.

In addition the scenes which were supposed to be set in Germany and Austria were actually shot in Switzerland.

The cast of characters were all a part of Easy Company so it makes up an interesting and diverse group. The main character is Major Richard Winters and is played by Damian Lewis. This character leads the entire cast for most of the episodes. The producers of the show felt that it was important to have a strong main character to help to tie the story together. Another character is Captain Lewis Nixon who was played by Ron Livingstone. This character was Major Winters' best friend and was portrayed as a frequent confidant during the series. Captain Ronald Speirs was played by Matthew Settle. This character leads Easy Company into battle and had some interesting stories and rumors discussed throughout the series.

Other characters include Second Lieutenant Carwood Lipton who was played by Donnie Wahlberg; Scott Grimes as Technical Sergeant Donald Malarkey, the character Staff Sergeant Darrell Powers (nickname Shifty) who was played by Peter Youngblood Hills; and Shane Taylor who plays Technician Fifth Grade Eugene "Doc" Roe who was so named because he served as a medic.

The show was well received by critics and had many positive reviews. It was also nominated for nineteen Emmy Awards and won size of them including the following: Outstanding Miniseries; Outstanding Casting for a miniseries, movie, or a special; and Outstanding Directing for a miniseries, movie, or a dramatic special. The show also won a Golden Globe award for Best miniseries, or Motion Picture made for Television.

It won an American Film Institute award and was selected for a Peabody Award. And it won a 2003 Writers Guild Award for its episode six.

There is no question that this was a very powerful series which helped to show viewers many events during World War II from a very personal perspective. In this way we were able to gain a much better understand how these events impacted the men who lived through them. This made for a very powerful and important presentation.
